Holiday Season Travel Tips
The holiday season marks a flurry of travel on the nation?s roads and in the air, as millions flock home and to see friends and loved ones in near and faraway destinations. And with increased traffic comes increased potential for harmful accidents. Protecting your family while traveling on the road means keeping your car primed for adverse weather conditions and remaining vigilant while driving. Here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction. *** Before Leaving Home*** Get your car checked out by a professional mechanic. Make sure the oil is up to date and that all brakes, belts, and hoses are in working order. All other fluids ? especially antifreeze ? should be filled to nominal levels. All seatbelts, the emergency brake, turning indicators and hazard lights should be in good working order. Pack a reliable Atlas and/or maps, and get detailed directions to your destination. Include the following in your trunk: extra anti-freeze, an ice scraper, two blankets, bottled water, battery jumper cables, tire changing tools, road flares and caution flags, and a flashlight and fresh batteries. A cell phone recharging cord is also a good idea. *** While on the road*** Keep your cell phone close at hand but do not talk on it while driving. Avoid the ?No Zones?: the blind spots on the backs and sides of eighteen-wheelers and trailer trucks. As a rule of thumb, if you can?t see the truck?s driver in his rear view mirror, you?re invisible to him, as well. Take rest breaks every two to three hours, and pull over to a rest stop if inclement weather begins to impair visibility. Keep everyone in the car buckled up until the car comes to a complete stop. Never leave children unaccompanied. When outside at a gas station or rest stop, keep family members in sight at all times. *** While at your destination*** In cold climates, start your car and let it idle a few minutes once a day, to prevent freezing. When staying in a motel, keep you car in a well-lit section of parking lot. Make sure cell phones are fully recharged every night. Restock and recheck all supplies before returning home.
